**we can only say that 2008 probably ranks as somewhere between the 7th and 12th warmest year."**
Yes,really warm here in Hawaii with Snow on Mauna Kea as early as October
record cold Winters in various parts of the world with New Orleans having record snow fall, It snowing in Las Vegas and Malibu, and snowing in London for the first time in 150 years

To make their data more accurate :-)

Answer - To make there data more accurate.

So I guess it's safe to say you have no answer to the question.
It's ok. Talking point parrots rarely do.

ziljn - Perhaps the glaciers are melting and Siberian permafrost is melting and spring is coming earlier because it is getting colder.

Well when GISS keeps adjusting historical temps downwards the current temps are artificially higher. So the "top 10 warmest years" is rather meaningless. The fact that it is over such a short period also makes it little more than a talking point.
Perhaps you could explain why they adjust historical temps on record downwards?

"These are US temperatures and we are talking GLOBAL warming. Globally, the top 10 warmest years have all occurred in the last 12 years."
pheil58 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
"Four of the top 10 years of US CONUS high temperature deviations are now from the 1930s: 1934, 1931, 1938 and 1939, while only 3 of the top 10 are from the last 10 years (1998, 2006, 1999). Several years (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004) fell well down the leaderboard, behind even 1900. (World rankings of temperature are calculated separately.)"

pheil - From NASA - "Finally, we note that we provide the rank of global temperature for individual years because there is a high demand for it from journalists and the public. The rank has scientific significance in some cases, e.g., when a new record is established. However, otherwise rank has limited value and can be misleading. Note that, given our estimated error bar in Figure 1, we can only say that 2008 probably ranks as somewhere between the 7th and 12th warmest year." |
