Some of those just look like very old mounts. Back then, they simply didn't have the same techniques and tools to make things look good like we taxidermists do now. Being a taxidermist, and having worked on a lot of the same animals, I would know. I do agree that some of those were just plain ridiculous though, but time and wear on mounts also has a lot to do with it. Like the ears on a deer after many years can often split apart, and the lips come untucked, and the eyes fall out. Depends.
