I love how commandingly she forces the orchestra to speed up a bit, right at the beginning of the aria! That's how you do it.

This is Rossini's last opera - Williem Tell or Guglielmo Tell in original. Very very different from his other operas, also written it many years latter then others. If you did not know - in the break he was a succesfull cook. :)

What the hell was I thinking, it was composed for the Theatre de l'Academie Royale du Musique, for which he also did Le Siege and Moise!!!!!!! Son stanco da morte--non posso ricordare piu!

Absolutely--between the much earlier Semiramide and it are innovations by others, esp. Meyerbeer, whose work is deeply Rossinian. Tell consciously breaks from Rossini's older forms, lines, arrangements, etc. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was composed for the Theatre-Italien--an incubator for the French Grand Opera tradition from which so many were to draw their inspiration. You're totally right to hear the piece's forward looking nature as it echoes in other composer's works.

You are right, it just sounds rather different than say Semiramide! Reminds me more of Massenet's style.

This is late Rossini; came out of retirement to compose this one, didn't he. Initiated French Grand Opera with this one. The coloratura is different, the line is different, but it's bel canto. This is great later Caballe, but for the real thing, check out her recording of this one--1973 I think, with Gedda and Bacquier. Same year she recorded that amazing Aida with Domingo. Sublime!

Ya'll can say what you want, but I don't know any Sopranos singing like that today!

She is the definition of effortless singing.
She is phenomenal!

Brava. Extraordinary. Exquisite. Perfection. This is probably the most articulate and heart-felt rendition of this aria ever. Gracias Monserrat. |
